There's no cause for alarm if you need to have a root canal. This procedure is so common, it’s practically routine. And despite what you may have heard about root canals, they are highly effective at saving your natural tooth, even if it has deep decay or trauma. And contrary to popular belief, a root canal isn't a scary experience.

The myths about root canals may be due to tales from back when pain management was not as sophisticated and root canal procedures were not as refined and straightforward. There was a time when many dentists would simply pull teeth instead of performing root canal treatment. 

Root canals have evolved tremendously since then. They are now quicker, safer, and more comfortable. If you need a root canal, knowing exactly what happens can ensure you're relaxed and comfortable each step of the way.

If the outer layers of your tooth are affected by a cavity, a filling is usually a good treatment. But if the damage extends into the core of the tooth where the nerves are, you can keep your tooth longer by having the decay and infected tissue removed from the pulp chamber through root canal therapy. 

Root canal therapy involves removing the damaged tissue, filling the cavity with a rubbery material, and sealing it. And because the tooth might weaken after a root canal for various reasons, a crown is placed to protect and strengthen your tooth, especially for biting or chewing. The color of the dental crown can match the color of your existing teeth to address the discoloration of your tooth once the pulp is removed.

There aren't many preparations you need to make. You may need to avoid eating just before your procedure if you're going to be sedated. A root canal usually takes an hour or less.

Dentists use local anesthesia to block pain during the procedure. But if you're really anxious, they might suggest sedative options to calm you. Once the anesthetic wears off, there could be some discomfort. And you should be able to return to your routines unless you have taken a sedative and will need time to recuperate.
